Google Maps update makes this popular app infinitely better to use

GOOGLE Maps is receiving a new update that makes the popular navigation app so much better to use. Here’s everything coming to Google Maps.

Google has paid a lot of attention to Maps this year. In 2019 users have been treated to augmented reality (AR), Incognito Mode and new accessibility features for blind and visually impaired individuals to name a few. But now it seems the Mountain View company is turning its attention to Google Maps’ design. A number of users have noticed the interface of the app has changed on their device with the introduction of version 10.31.1.
As noted by Android Police, the new update completely rids of Maps’ established “hamburger” side menu that lets you access your favourite places, messages, profile and more.
That’s no bad thing. While the side menu is certainly useful, leveraging it takes up most of a phone’s display, meaning you can’t really use it and browse the globe at the same time.
Google is changing all that though. Maps 10.31.1 comes with added tabs positioned at the bottom of the screen that offer similar functionality.
Previously, the bottom of Google Maps on mobile was only home to three tabs: Explore, Commute and For you. As the names suggest, the first gives users free reign to roam about the world, the second is customised to help you get to work and the final one offers location recommendations based on your tastes.

The newest version of Google Maps has five tabs meanwhile: Map, Commute, Saved, Post and Latest. While the names suggest the For you tab has been ousted, the Latest toggle now offers the same functionality.
The new Saved and Post tabs are pretty self explanatory. The former shows you places you have liked, favourited or flagged while the latter allows you to contribute to Google Maps with a review for instance.
A number of other features that were previously available in Google Maps’ “hamburger” menu have now been moved to the app’s account page located in the top right-hand corner. This is the same place used to access the new Incognito Mode.
Now a user’s timeline, location sharing features and more are all located in the account page, as shown by Android Police.
On the whole, the new Google Maps design seems geared towards giving users more screen real estate when taking advantage of features within the app. That’s an addition that’ll certainly make it much more intuitive to use.
The new version of Google Maps has arrived for some users already, suggesting it’s gradually rolling out to everyone. Express.co.uk was unable to use the new design at the time of writing, though.
